A Book I Regretted Buying By Harvey Partridge In the early 1970's, I shelled out a small fortune in order to possess an Encyclopaedia Britannica. It was an utter waste of money! I consulted it about 15 times and each time it let me down. A resident of Britain at the time, I expected to find under 'Common House Spider' or 'Spider, House, Common' at least a passing reference to the native English spider by that name - the Tegenaria Domestica. But no! Looking up town names like 'Portsmouth' and 'Birmingham' raised towns in New Hampshire and Alabama with little, if any, reference to the towns in Hampshire and Warwickshire (as it was then - now West Midlands). The more I tried to use it the less useful I found it. It should be called the Encyclopaedia (or Encyclopedia) Americana. It may be with the passing years that subsequent editions have addressed this issue, but, somehow, I doubt it!
